July 6, at Castle Field,
John James Newman, Ticklin' the Pickle and The South Side Racketeers

Live music at Castle Field Southsea, 6th July 2025

John James Newman is an accomplished singer/songwriter and is the son of Sandy Newman, lead singer of Scottish hit makers “Marmalade”.

John is an enigmatic performer; his live shows are an energetic blend of a soulful, emotive voice matched perfectly with his rhythmic guitar style. With an eclectic repertoire, John always strives to entertain with the quality and conviction of a true artist in a firm belief that good songs need good singers and good singers deserve good songs.

In early 2012, John appeared on the first ever BBC the Voice UK after being talent scouted for the show. In the Blind Auditions Sir Tom Jones and Danny O’Donoghue from the Script both turned their chairs, and John joined Team Danny going on to perform in the Battle rounds of the show.

John has opened for the likes of Natasha Bedingfield, The Sugababes, Elkie Brooks, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Jools Holland and Alabama 3 and notably in June 2010, supported Bon Jovi at the O2 Arena in London with his band ‘The Velvet Hearts’. In the first three months of their creation, The Velvet Hearts notched up more YOU TUBE hits than Gwen Stefani and The Gorrilaz.

Ticklin' the Pickle have been on a friendship led musical jazz/funk/soul journey for 29yrs! Starting when students at Chichester Uni in 1994, they listened to Jimmy Mc Griff, Booker T & the MG's, James Taylor Quartet, The Meters, Tower Of Power, etc.

By 1995 they were out gigging, and as they've become older and wiser, learnt to appreciate these bands even more.

The slickness and skill of their performances have delighted crowds across the country and locally at events such as Victorious and Live at the Bandstand. Their humour and off the cuff delivery shines through in an understated and humble manner that lets the music speak for itself.

"Personally two words that fill me with dread are 'backing track', if it ain't live, warts n' all', then it ain't live! So waddya say, enough of my yakkin' Come and smear your ears in our musical warts." Tim Hudson, T.T.P.

The South Side Racketeers were originally conceived on a stag night about four in the morning sometime in 2004, when four friends with a common love for sixties Blue Beat, Ska, Jamaican RnB and other music decided to form a band incorporating the above influences into their own material. The Racketeers without doubt are one of Portsmouth's finest and certainly one of the most popular bands in the area since the early days of 'Empitfish', 'The Caravans', 'Six Gun Sound' of the early 80s.

Now a six / seven piece band playing Jamaican RnB, Trad Ska, with lashings of rare Soul, charismatic to the end with consistently tight and lively performances.

The Racketeers can be seen performing in venues across the south of England with an energetic and uplifting delivery that will have you up and dancing before you know it.
