Living Streets Initiative, Portsmouth
The Living Streets Portsmouth Initiative is an exciting new project in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth City Council, FORM+FUNCTION Regeneration UK CIC, IDL: Architecture London and local businesses and communities. The aim is to improve bio-diversity, encourage sustainable travel and reclaim under utilised space on our streets for the use of the local community.
The city of Portsmouth is densely populated and while many of us need to own a vehicle, we all appreciate that they cause congestion and contribute to air pollution. We desperately need to transform the way we travel and actively work to reduce the city's carbon emissions.
Living Streets aims to provide bike storage racks, increase the provision of benches for walkers of all abilities to rest, create access for wheelchair users, walking frame users and walker access, and at the same time create micro-habitats for foliage, bugs and other local wildlife.
Living Streets will provide planters, designed by Architecture students from the University of Portsmouth, these will be planted up with a range of different plants such as cabbages to attract butterflies, flowers to attract bees, foliage to provide shade, bird boxes, bat boxes and bug hotels.
There are already Living Streets projects up and running across the UK and Europe which help communities rethink how they use and interact with the streets and urban spaces that they use everyday. These initiatives help make local streets cleaner, quieter and healthier.
A design competition for Uuniversity of Portsmouth architecture students was held to design the free standing structures including community consultation meetings. Portsmouth City Council urban design members provided constructive feedback in tandem with experts in independent practice.
Two pilot schemes are proposed for the summer of 2022 one in Albert Road and one in Highland Road, local businesses supporting the shemes include:
- Southsea Cycles
- Herbies Health Store
- Nicholsons Tapas
- Cileste Hair and Beauty
- Hunter Gatherer
- Goulds Jewellers
- Broadway Coffee Roasters
- Top Mark's Hairdressers
- Southsea Nets and Curtains
- The Clock Shop
- Bengal Spice
- RPM Records
Living Streets are what happens when parking spaces and small under used roadside areas are transformed into a community space with benches seats and planters.
Challenge the idea that kerbside space is only for cars.
